April 24 Friday

Good morning! Happy Arbor Day! Arbor Day is a holiday celebrating trees and taking care of nature.

Let’s begin our day with prayer.

Let the trees of the forest sing,
Let them sing for joy before the Lord,
For he comes to judge the earth.
Amen.

If you have any special intentions, please finish with the Glory Be to the Father after them. (You may want to say a prayer for all the police officers, firefighters, and ambulance drivers.)

Please say the Pledge of Allegiance.

PHONICS
*read the word list on page 225
*do box #2 and circle all the words with ee spellings and underline all the words with ea spellings

Oral Segmenation
*say the following words one at a time to your child

*have your child say each word sound by sound

You say: see                            Your child says: /s/ /ē/

Words: each, keep, team, beach, east, keeps, clear, dreams

(This activity helps your child take apart words which helps them spell words and notice vowel sounds.)

*review high frequency words:
find, around, under, wash, here, not

(If you made flashcards for high frequency words you could spend 5 minutes a day going over them.)

Page 229 Think and Write
*have your child say the name of each picture and write the spelling for each sound in a separate box (they can ask you ‘Which long e spelling?’)

        1~s-ee-d
2~p-ea-ch
3~s-l-ee-p

Listen and Spell
*have your child write each word and the sentence

You say:
1-read              2-deep
3-neat             4-sheet
5-I need to speak with you.

(again it is okay for your child to ask ‘Which long e spelling?’)

Page 230 Make New Words
*make new words with ea or ee spellings

(When we do this at school they have alphabet tiles or flashcards. You can also make a template on paper or a whiteboard with ee and ea and have your child add letters to make words. This time it is difficult because Pete, meat, and feet all rhyme but use different long e spellings. You can suggest words families like:
                -eat,   -ee,   -ean

If they make a mistake, explain it is tricky and help correct the mistake.)

Take another quick break

READING
We are continuing to read books about living and working in a community. Keep thinking about this as you listen to our new book BLACKOUT

*please fill in the small anchor chart

Title: Blackout

Author/Illustrator: John Rocco (He did both)

(If your child needs to practice ask them:
‘What does the title tell us?’
‘What does the author do?’
‘What does the illustrator do?’

*discuss vocabulary
blackout-(when all the lights in a town or city go out)
huddled-(to crowd together in a tight group) (remind them of the penguins)
normal-(what usually happens)

*listen to/watch the book on youtube.com

Ask:
‘What makes a city loud?’ (Did you notice the sound words in the
illustrations at the beginning of the book?)

‘The Dad made shadows of things on the wall. Who did he scare?
(the cat) ‘Do you know anyone who can make shadow pictures on the
walls?’ (try it tonight with a flashlight and your hand in the dark)

‘Where does the family go first?’ (to the rooftop)

(Explain when they get up to the rooftop, the author says ‘and found the lights’ about rooftops on city buildings, show them a picture if they don’t understand.)

‘What does the author mean by lights? (many stars)

‘Why are the people having parties on the rooftops?’ (it is too hot in the apartments, more fun, people are connecting, not being separated in their apartments)

‘What happened when they went down and out onto the street?’
(another party was going on there too)

‘Why does the boy turn out the lights when everything is back to normal?’ (he wants to play games with his family like when the lights were out, no one was too busy to play when the light were out)

‘How did the blackout help the boy’s community?’ (everyone was together not in their own apartments.)
