*students
read list of words to parents
*if
your child reads the word quickly (automatically) without sounding out or
blending
· give them a check in both boxes
*if
your child sounds out or blends the word and does it correctly
· give them a check in the first box (green box)
· do not put a check in the second box (blue box)
*if
your child can not read, sound out, or blend the word

READING
We
are continuing to discuss the book The Night Worker
*you
may want to rewatch the story on youtube.com
*continue
filling in small anchor chart
Genre:
Fiction-Realistic Fiction
‘Why?’
(because the characters, setting, and events are like
people, places, and situations
in real life)
Setting:
Alex’s home
construction site
city
*This
story doesn’t have a problem to solve.
Characters:
Alex
Papa
construction workers
Ask: ‘When do you think Alex’s papa sleeps?’
(because he works at night, he has to sleep during the
day)
‘Who else might work at night?’
(doctors, nurses, hospital staff, police officers,
firefighters, ambulance drivers, store workers)
‘How are Alex’s papa and other night workers helping
their community?’
Noticings:
· beautiful full-page oil-painting illustrations
(different from A Bus
Called Heaven’s water-colored illustrations)
· dull colors in the illustrations make it look like nighttime
· vocabulary that talks about machines at construction
sites
· author uses language that makes you think
‘stars shine like
beacons’
‘it sinks its teeth into the
earth’
Discuss: ‘Why
do clouds rise from the dust when the bulldozer pushes the soil?’
‘How
are the dirt clouds different from clouds you see in the sky?’
‘When
the story says the soil is pushed into a ‘midnight mountain’, what do you think
of when you hear these words?’
‘Is
an excavator a person, and animal, or a machine?’
‘Why
does the author say that the excavator reaches out its arm, sinks its teeth
into the earth and lets out a groan?’
‘Does
an excavator really have an arm and teeth?’
Think
of other things we talk about having
arms (some chairs) or teeth (comb).
‘Can a machine wave or groan?’ (flags wave and a stomach
can groan)
Compare
and contrast the books The Night Worker and Blackout
(you
can look back at the small anchor charts for each book)
Ask: ‘What do these books have in
common?’
‘Think about where these books take place. Describe the
places.’
‘How do the illustrators in these books, show that it
is nighttime?’
‘Think about the characters in each story.’
‘What do the characters in The Night Worker do
at night?
What do the characters in Blackout do at night?’
‘What did you learn about communities from these
stories?

‘This Day Was Made by the Lord’
Yesterday
we talked about how Jesus told stories to help us learn about God’s love and
forgiveness.
*watch
this Beginner’s Bible video about The Prodigal Son, the Lost Sheep, and the
Lost Coin.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-FH62O_9sI&t=663s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-FH62O_9sI&t=663s
These
stories teach us that we celebrate when someone or something that has been
lost, is found. (the son, the sheep, and the coin) they remind us that God loves
us and He will always forgive us if we ask to be forgiven.
