*help them to use these word families:

-ay family or -ain family

Counting money
*practice recognizing and counting dimes

(Remind them that it is like when we counted ten-frames and some ones in class.)
*be sure you child can recognize and tell the value of dimes, nickels, and pennies

*do some extra practice if your child is having difficulty (The practice  doesn’t have to be for a long period of time, you can do it for a few minutes, then leave it and return to it later in the day for a few minutes. Do this for several days until your child feels confident.)

Page 355 Dimes and Pennies
*read information inside the blue rope
*questions #1-3 count on and write how much
*question #4 ask ‘How many pennies equal 1 dime?’

Page 256
*if your child is ready to work independently, have them count and write the answers for questions #5-7
*if your child needs more help, then do questions #5-7 together

(I always remind them to pause when they come to a different type of coin so their brain can switch from counting by 10s to counting on by 1s)

*Problem solving question #8-read word problem
(Explain that this problem has more than one step to find the answer.)

*step 1-figure out how many ¢ Lily has (draw pictures, use real coins, or count on with a list of numbers) (Lily has 23¢.)
*step 2-now you have to figure out what stamp Lily CAN’T buy. (Explain that if the stamp is 23¢ or less, Lily CAN buy it. So we have to look for a stamp that is greater than 23¢.) (answer-the purple one for 24¢)

*critical thinking question #9 which change purse is between 40¢ and 50¢

*step 1-use real coins or draw pictures of the coins (when I draw pictures of coins I just do a circle with and amount on it) for each change purse
*step 2-count how much is in each change purse and write the number of ¢ underneath it
*step3-now figure out which change purse has between 40¢ and 50¢
(1st purse-39¢-no; 2nd purse-45¢-yes; 3rd purse-32¢-no)
