May 28 Thursday

Good morning!!

How are you today? I hope you’re ready for a great day!

Please email me by 10:00AM so I can take and submit attendance.

Let’s begin our day with a prayer to the Holy Spirit as we get ready for Pentecost this Sunday.

Come Holy Spirit
And make us
Pentecost People.
Let your Wisdom guide us.
Amen.

Please say the Pledge of Allegiance.

READING        8:55 Reading Lesson with Mrs. Asaro
We are beginning a new unit called ‘Journeys Near and Far’

WRITING
*fold a piece of paper in half
*on the left side of the paper draw and label an animal
*on the right side of the paper draw and explain what the animal does to protect itself from an attacker
Ex:           right side                     left side
Octopus                      The octopus sprays ink to
                                               confuse their attacker.

*we will read and discuss these at our Friday Zoom meeting.

MATH
*pick an item from your home (not an eraser or a notebook)
*measure it with paperclip or blocks
*make sure when your child is measuring, they start measuring at the beginning of the item
*now give them an inch ruler and have you child measure the item and tell you how many inches long it is

Page 415  Inches
*read information inside the blue rope
(A common mistake students may make is they will not put the beginning of the ruler on the beginning of the picture, they will put it at the beginning of the paper.)
questions #1-2
*measure and write the length of the pictures
questions #3-4
*measure a real eraser and notebook
*write the length
question #5
*have your child explain how to use a ruler to you or a sibling

Page 416
Questions #6-8
*discuss that estimating is taking a guess using information that you know
*remind them we estimated how many shells in a jar
(I usually tell them that because I am 5 feet tall, I use my height to estimate how tall something is.  I will compare myself to a file cabinet or a fence and know if it is bigger than 5 feet or smaller than 5 feet.)
*have your child look at #6, they gave them the answer about 6 inches (so they can’t really estimate yet, but they can use that information to estimate #7 and 8)
question #7
*explain that the shovel has to be smaller than 6 inches
*have them estimate (take a guess) and write down their estimate
*measure the shovel (about 4 inches)
question #8
*use the answer for #7 to help them estimate the height of the watering can (it has to be less than 4 inches)
*have them write down their estimate
*measure the watering can, remind them to make sure to use the red lines to help know where to start and stop (about 2 inches)

Critical Thinking     Multi-step
Step 1-measure each plant
Step 2-how tall will the plant be if it grows 2 inches every week
question #9
Plant now: (2) inches
Plant after 3 weeks:   2    +    2    +    2    +    2    =    (8 inches)
starting      2 inches for the 3 weeks
                      measurement

question #10
plant now: (1)inch
Plant after 3 weeks:   1     +    2    +    2    +    2    =    (7 inches)
starting       2 inches for the 3 weeks
                    measurement
